Sautéd Banana Blossom






Let's prepare another delicious recipe, specially enjoyed by Brazilian families...Enjoy!

Here is what you'll needL

  • 2 to 4 banana flowers (heart)

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1/2 of a small chopped onion

  • 4 cloves chopped garlic

  • 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper

  • 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro

  • 2 tablespoons of chopped scallions

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1/2 of cup coconut milk

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of shredded coconut

How to prepare:

  1. Peel the purple leaves called (bracts) until you get to the white part of the heart. Make sure to remove rows of flowers and put them aside.

  2. Cut the heart as shown in the video and add to the bowl with the water, vinegar and salt. Now let’s clean the banana flowers by removing the matchstick-like pistil and the outer layer leave as shown in the video.

  3. Boil the banana flowers 3 times.

  4. After the 3rd time, soak the flowers with water and about 2 tablespoons of yogurt for a minimum of 3 hours or overnight.

  5. Rinse it and dry with paper towel.

  6. Sauté onions, garlic and bell peppers for about 2 minutes.

  7. Add the paprika, cumin seeds, turmeric, cilantro, scallions, salt and pepper to taste.

  8. Now add the banana flowers and sauté for about 5 to 8 minutes with 1/4 cup of water.

  9. Add the coconut milk, shredded coconut and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes.

  10. Serve over your favorite rice!
