Upside-Down Apple Cake


Welcome to another recipe by Flavors of my Roots!

Let's prepare another delicious recipe, specially enjoyed by American families during the Holidays...Enjoy!

Here is what you'll need:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 stick of butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

  • 1/2 of teaspoon of salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

  • 4 to 5 apples peeled and cut in fourths


For the caramel:

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of sugar

  • 1 stick of butter

  • 1 cup of heavy whipping cream

  • 1 pinch of salt if the butter is unsalted


How to prepare:

  1. In a skillet or pan, add the sugar, once the sugar starts to melt, keep on stirring until it’s completely melted.

  2. Add the butter and heavy whipping cream. Mix well for about 2 minutes or until everything is incorporated.

  3. Arrange the sliced apples onto top of the caramel and set aside.

  4. In a standing mixer or regular mixer, beat the butter for about 1 minute.

  5. Add the granulated sugar, the brown sugar and beat for 1 more minute.

  6. Add the eggs, milk and vanilla. Beat for 1 minute.

  7. Pour the dry mixture into the wet mixture and beat for about 1 minute.

  8. Pour the batter on top of the apples and bake for about 45 minutes.

  9. Serve as it is or with vanilla ice cream on top.
